Just yesterday, Microsoft introduced a version of Windows 10 called Windows 10 S, obviously this is an answer to Google’s Chrome OS.
So, what is Windows 10 S? How does it compare to the regular Windows 10? Why Windows 10 S? Well, here is what you need to know about Windows 10 S.
What is Windows 10 S?
In the words of Microsoft “Windows 10 S is a specific configuration of Windows 10 Pro that offers a familiar, productive Windows experience that’s streamlined for security and performance”.
Everything that will run on the Windows 10 S is downloadable from the Windows store, this offers an assured level of security. Since the design is based on Windows 10, the user interface is pretty familiar with what you have on Windows 10.
Security and Performance
Unlike the regular Windows 10, the Windows 10 S will exclusively runs apps from the Windows Store. Now this doesn’t mean that desktop apps won’t run on the Windows 10 S, but they’ll need to be specially packaged and listed in the Windows Store. This should help prevent malware and unnecessary apps from running at boot up.
Browser and Search Preferences
It has been hinted that Windows 10 S will run any browser listed on the windows store, meaning that if chrome is listed on the store, you can use it. However, you cannot alter Microsoft Edge from being the default browser, meaning that if you click on a link, by default it will open with Microsoft Edge. This is similar to the Google’s chrome OS, which only lets you use chrome as the browser. Microsoft is also locking down Microsoft Edge to only work with its Bing search engine in Windows 10 S.
Integration with OneDrive
Even better than the regular Windows 10, Windows 10 S integrates with OneDrive so files are saved to the cloud, in sync and accessible from your devices.
Switching from Windows 10 S to regular Windows 10
Fortunately, there is an option to switch to windows 10. This will be useful for users who need to work with desktop apps that are not available in the windows store. This comes with a fee though, but Microsoft’s Surface Laptop will include a free Windows 10 Pro upgrade until the end of the year.
Why Windows 10 S
This product is aimed at the education market. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 S was inspired by students and teachers. It’s also a great choice for any Windows customer looking for consistent performance and advanced security.
Beyond that it is also a strategic move. The universal windows platform (UWP) for Windows 10 haven’t exactly had much success. The windows 10 S will force developers to port their applications to the windows store. This in turn will increase microsoft’s control over the windows ecosystem.
Desktop apps have had the freedom to run wild in Windows for years. Windows 10 S is Microsoft’s latest attempt at trying to move Windows to a more modern environment.
